Colts to Sign a Wide Receiver?

Jim Irsay takes to Twitter to hint at a “whopper” signing.

The Colts have been unusually busy this offseason. With hefty pockets due to having $43.427 million in cap space, the Colts have already gone on a $34.3 million shopping spree on offensive and defensive weapons. Though no established superstars will join the roster in 2013, notable additions include right tackle Gosder Cherilus, safety LaRon Landry, and defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois. In total, Indy signed seven free agents, re-signed two current Colts, and franchised punter Pat McAfee.

And they may not be done yet.

Despite being in Arizona for NFL meetings, Jim Irsay went on a 1-am Twitter spree last night, sending out roughly 8 tweets that hinted at a new impending signing – a trade perhaps.

“ColtFans, we already past the cap cash wise/ we’re workin on a deal, 1 we’ve been workin on for 5 days/ we’re ver, very close 2 making it work”

“In Arizona, but the phone lines are burning up…we want to win so damn bad our toes ache and our brains are gurgling!!!!!!!”

“Our fingers could end up crooked and elbows drip with sweat and blood!”

“The car almost ended up n the ditch…swerving towards negativity, but we’re still n the fight..we’re desperately trying, need coffee, strong!”

“We need a turnover, slipping away but 4 minutes ago we started running the no huddle…moving the arrow again but it’s nip n tuck!!!!”

“Everyone stand buy, pour strong drink…do ur voodoo,Colts need the strength of its nation to get this whopper in the boat! DO U UNDERSTAND?!”

And if you wanted a hint as to what kind of player this deal could be for, Irsay was glad to provide:

Who exactly could it be? Well, Irsay has been known to over-hype a signing. Ricky Jean Francois may not have been the player Colts fans would expect to be “ELATED!!!!!” about. But who knows? The most eligible wide receivers on the market include restricted free agent Victor Cruz (now that would be something to get excited about). Davone Bess from Miami is another name that has swirled with the rumors. Doug Baldwin from Seatlle even has ties to the Colts after playing at Stanford with Andrew Luck and under new Colts OC Pep Hamilton.

Irsay has left us with another cryptic mystery, but hopefully it’s solved sooner rather than later.

Quarterback

Start’em

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Buffalo Bills

Fitzpatrick has seven touchdowns in two games against Kansas City and Oakland, who have had subpar starts to the season. Now enter the New England Patriots who have torched opposing defenses, while in fact being torched themselves. I could easily seeing Fitzy continuing his trend of throwing three or more touchdowns this week against a bad Patriots defense that allowed Philip Rivers to throw over 350 yards and two Touchdowns.

Sit’em

Eli Manning, New York Giants

When Matt Ryan played against the Eagles last week, he threw four touchdowns against their vaunted defense. The kicker is that Ryan had Tony Gonzalez to throw to, and Eli won’t have a solid tight end to target because Hakeem Nicks is going to be covered by either Nhamdi Asomugah or Asante Samuel. So I will expect a lot more forced balls into tight coverage, and I’ll be surprised if Manning throws for 200 yards or a touchdown.

Running Back

Start’em

Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons

We’ve seen back-to-back 100-yard games for the burner against the Eagles and the Bears, two pretty solid defenses, so I have no reason to think he won’t do it again against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, I don’t think he will go too far over the century mark, although he should be good for a couple of touchdowns.

Sit’em

Beanie Wells, Arizona Cardinals

Going to Seattle will prove to be more challenging than it seems for the Cardinals; they can torch the Seattle corners easily and shouldn’t have much reason to hand off the ball to Wells, and even then I would say the Seahawks have a not-so-bad run defense that plays a lot better at home than they do on the road.

Wide Receiver

Start’em

Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals

No corner on the Seattle roster can keep up with Larry Fitzgerald. It’s that simple. The Seahawks’ cornerbacks are too young to be able to double cover the Fitz properly. Also, it’s not like last year when the Cards were playing musical chairs at the quarterback position. Kevin Kolb is a solid guy who can get the ball downfield.

Sit’em

Dwayne Bowe Kansas City Chiefs,

Look, the Chiefs aren’t beating anyone this season, so there is no reason to stack the line now that Jamaal Charles is done for the year. Bowe is a very talented receiver, but there just isn’t anything special around him. Matt Cassel is laughable as a starting quarterback, and the offensive line is bad.

Last year, no one was catching more passes than Austin Collie until he took a few devastating hits that led to major concussions and his missing the second half of the season. After lots of time away from the field, while the recent lockout was getting figured out, hopefully it was enough time for Collie to get some healing done. There were many injuries to the Colts receiving corp in 2010, with Dallas Clark and Anthony Gonzalez also missing significant time.

Gonzalez has been on the injured list for the past two seasons, but before that he was a solid third option in a Colts offense that featured Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. Since then, Harrison has retired and Wayne has become the unquestioned number one, while fourth-year speedster Pierre Garcon has slid into the number two spot, which is more of a part time job because Clark is going to be getting plenty of looks as well. Garcon was off to a slow start this past season but mostly because teams didn’t want to surrender the long bomb to him and veteran quarterback Peyton Manning isn’t afraid to look to other options.

Collie may not have to be a full-time number three option, especially if Gonzalez can stay healthy the whole year; both players are of a similar mold. So a time share wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen, especially if it means both players would be healthy the whole year. The same goes for Clark; Jacob Tamme did a good job filling in last year, catching 67 passes for 631 yards and 5 touchdowns. However the split goes, whether its 60/40 Collie or Gonzalez, there will be plenty of chances and bad matchups for opposing defenses, as they have to worry about Wayne, Garcon, Clark, Collie and Gonzalez.

We also can’t forget about Blair White, who came off the practice squad to help out the team. White didn’t catch many long passes but he was still a consistent option for Manning during an injury-plagued 2010. The truth is, as long as Manning is under center, the receivers are going to produce, but a slow start could become a reality if Manning misses most of training camp this year after off-season neck surgery.
