On Sunday night, it looked like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had all but wrapped up Chip Kelly as their next head coach, but we awoke to the news this morning that he was instead staying put as the top man with the Oregon Ducks. As the Indianapolis Colts and owner Jim Irsay also continue their search for a new fearless leader, I have to wonder if the developing Kelly situation doesn’t have a tinge of Blue and White to it. Before Jeff Fisher signed with the Rams last week, there was speculation that he was waiting for the Colts job to open up. Although that didn’t play out in our favor, I have to think that the Indy job is at least as attractive as the Bucs’ gig, and that Kelly might at least be open to speaking with the Colts. After all, he’s already shown that he’s not averse to flirting with the NFL, so why not Indianapolis?

On what should have been a Monday night showcase for Peyton Manning on his way to another Super Bowl appearance, the Indianapolis Colts instead fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road, 24-17. In his debut as a starting NFL quarterback, Curtis Painter threw for 281 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. The Colts’ line-of-scrimmage game took a decided step backwards, as the team rushed for just 62 yards while allowing Tampa to run for 192.

Painter looked much better than I expected that he would, and he might be able to turn in a decent season in Manning’s stead. The Colts now stand at 0-4, but the schedule goes soft now, with games against the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. Go Colts!?

Every week during the 2011 NFL season, we’ll take a look at the Colts’ injury situation, as well as that of their upcoming opponent. For Game 4, here is how the M*A*S*H units for the Colts and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are shaping up.

Colts

LB Ernie Sims (knee) is questionable.

QB Kerry Collins (concussion?) is questionable.

LB Gary Brackett (shoulder) is out for the season (IR).

DE Dwight Freeney (ankle) is questionable.

S Melvin Bullitt (shoulder) is out for the season (IR). He has full next-man-upped into Bob Sanders’ shoes.

Out in San Diego, S Bob Sanders is out for the season. That’s just how hard the injury bug has hit the Colts!

TE Brody Eldridge (knee) is questionable.

DT Fili Moala (ankle) is questionable.

G Ryan Diem (ankle) is questionable.

G Joe Reitz (ankle) is questionable.

S Antoine Bethea (heel) is questionable.

QB Peyton Manning (neck) is out. Duh.

Buccaneers

T James Lee (knee) is out.

WR Sammie Stroughter (foot) is out.

LB Quincy Black (ankle) is questionable.

TE Jack Pianalto (calf) is probable.

QB Josh Johnson (ankle) is probable.

TE Kellen Winslow (knee) is probable.

—

The Colts always beat their opponents in terms of injury list length, even if no actual wins are forthcoming.
