Fantasy Football Friday

So last week I was a little off base with my call out on Eli Manning, as he ended up throwing for four touchdowns and just over 250 yards against an Eagles defense that was expected to shut down most opponents. Let me tell you why that was a fluke: first of all Eli only completed 16 passes on 23 attempts, so it’s not like the Giants aired out the ball to its receivers. They will do their best to run the ball, and that’s probably their key to success. As for Michael Turner and his 20 yards on 11 carries, let’s just say that he and I aren’t on speaking terms at the moment and won’t be unless he rushes for at least 100 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. Enough with the preamble; let’s look at my picks for this weekend’s start’em/sit’em.

Running Backs

Start’em

Chris Johnson, Titans

You’re obviously starting Chris Johnson if you drafted him, but for those of you trying to get cute with your lineups, one word of advice: don’t! I traded him on week 5 the year he went crazy and emerged onto the fantasy scene. Let’s just say I regretted every second. Just give CJ2K some time, because his schedule after the bye week is quite favorable. Plus, few players have the ability to break open a big run like Johnson does, and that alone is worth the wait.

Ryan Matthews, Chargers

The guy has finally arrived, and he just might be here to stay as long as Mike Tolbert doesn’t sneak in to vulture any goal line carries. This week against the Dolphins is going to be Matthews’ make-or-break game in my opinion. If he is able to come through with a solid outing, then he should get the bulk of the carries the rest of the season.

According to Plan…Mwahahaha!

Well, the Jags did exactly what they were supposed to do and that’s knock off the top seed. It’s all going according to plan, so now it’s time to root for the Bolts tonight! Now, we can have some explaining the different possibilities!

Should the Chargers win, the 2nd Round will look like this:

Jacksonville Jaguars at New England Patriots
San Diego Chargers at Indianapolis Colts

Should the Titans beat the Chargers, bad things could happen:

Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots
Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts

Remember, the Colts play the top-seeded team left after Wild Card weekend, and Wild Card weekend seedings look like this:

1. Patriots
2. Colts
~~3. Steelers~~
4. Chargers
5. Jaguars
6. Titans

So…The reason I’m pushing for the Colts to play the Bolts next weekend is because I think that the Jags have the best chance of beating the Pats besides the Colts. And the real reason why any team should want to get to the Super Bowl (besides getting that ring), especially this season, is to stop the Pats in the midst of their 16-0 reverie.

Wild Card Weekend Is Here!

Again, if you’ve been living under a rock for the last three weeks, the Colts earned a No. 2 bid in the AFC and a first round bye so we won’t be seeing them in for another full week. Naptown’s Finest will have more information, recapping an incredibly exhausting and awesome regular season for both players and fans, next week, but in the meantime there’s plenty of action this weekend as we welcome 2007-2008 NFL Playoffs! (I’ve bolded the AFC matchups.)

Saturday, 5-January:

Washington Redskins vs. Seattle Seahawks…4:30pm on NBC.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers…8:00pm on NBC.

Sunday, 6-January:

New York Giants at Tampa Bay Buccaneers…1:00pm on FOX.

Tennessee Titans at San Diego Chargers…4:30pm on CBS.

If I understand this right, we will play the highest-seeded victor out of these two AFC Wild Card games. So…
