His new Nnamdi guerre is "Asomugha, Surprise Eagle."

Like a frantic last-minute Peyton Manning touchdown drive, the Philadelphia Eagles swooped in from nowhere and nabbed the biggest free agent prize of this tumultuous off-season: former Oakland Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. By ponying up $60 million ($35 million guaranteed), the Eagles upset other high-profile Nnamdi suitors, including the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys. This outcome of the Asomugha saga is about as good as could have been for the Indianapolis Colts, even though they won’t benefit directly from Nnamdi’s enormous talents.

For starters, the Houston Texans were thought to be the front-runners to land Nnamdi for most of this week, but he was apparently very diligent in his approach, and the time lag made the Texans nervous. To make sure they weren’t left completely empty-handed, Houston bowed out and signed former Cincinnati cornerback Jonathan Joseph. Joseph is a big upgrade for the Texans, but he is not Asomugha, and, as Michael Floresca wrote earlier, he didn’t exactly face the stiffest of competition during his years in the AFC Central. Good news for the Colts.

Perhaps even better news is that the New York Jets were next on the runway to secure Nnamdi’s services, and we all know what a thorn the Jets have become for the Colts. Adding another world-class corner to Darrelle Revis would have made it that much harder for Indy to get past Rex Ryan’s team come playoff time. Now, the Colts won’t have to worry about Asomugha until at least the Super Bowl.

Hey, it’s not like the Colts actually signed a free agent to improve their own team, but any good news is worth noting in this quiet and largely discouraging week. No Nnamdi for the Texans OR the Jets qualifies. I’ll take it.

In the 26-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Austin Collie had one of the most violent hits in probably NFL history. Collie was hit hard by two Eagle defenders in the head. He laid motionless and got knocked out before he even hit the ground! That’s how badly hurt Collie was.

Thanks to his new helmet, which was a newly-designed one made by Schutt, Collie is now safe and most probably ready to go to play for the New England Patriots this week in Foxborough.

The helmet is believed to even save Collie’s life!

Collie currently does not want to talk about the incident to the media.

“I understand everyone’s concern, but I prefer not to discuss the specifics of the play in Philadelphia. I hope that can be respected,” he said. “It was a football play. And that’s part of football. Now I want to focus my efforts on continuing the gradual process of getting back on the field and helping our team.”

The hit was penalized 15 yards in the game. Team President Bill Polian thinks that Kurt Coleman, the man who hit Collie, should not be fined.

“My personal feeling is that the rules we have established would go a long way to protecting players and helping the problem,” Polian told a listener on Monday’s weekly radio show. “But in the end we still have a hard plastic helmet hitting another hard plastic helmet at speeds up to 40 mph.”

Collie has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game.

“Every day I feel like I am improving, and it was great to get back on the field in some capacity Wednesday,” he said. “The doctors and training staff here have been tremendous. I can’t say that enough.”

Hopefully we look forward to see him play!

According to the Indianapolis Star, Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek thought Dwight Freeney quit in the the Colts’ 26-24 loss to them. Celek had no catches, but spent the game blocking. He went on a Philadelphia radio station saying the following.

“He was so frustrated, mad,” Celek said. “You could tell after a few guys hit him, he would just kind of quit on a play.”

When Freeney heard this interview, he thought it was kind of funny to him.

“A guy who doesn’t block me one-on-one. He had two other guys helping him or another guy helping him and he’s talking trash after the fact,” Freeney said. “I wish I heard some of that during the game. But I didn’t hear it.

“It is what it is. They won. Hats off to him and them. I’ll probably see him again.”
