For a long time, the Indianapolis Colts went with Tony Dungy’s “Tampa Two” defensive, which focused more on speed, rather than size. As successful as that defensive scheme proved to be, it all cost the Colts at times, when they would get smashed in the mouth and ran over by heavy running teams. Indianapolis brought in a new scheme on defense, when they brought in rookie head coach Chuck Pagano from the Baltimore Ravens. Pagano brought in former Raven Cory Redding, and drafted defensive tackle Josh Chapman from Alabama, to try and beef up the defensive line. Injuries to both players kept the Colts from truly developing the defense that Pagano was trying to put in place. Perhaps the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine has shown the Colts a few players on the defensive line that they may be able to use as another piece to finish the puzzle.

Two of the three best performances in the bench press were defensive tackles. Brandon Williams from Missouri Southern St. tied for the top spot in the bench press, with 38 reps. Williams was followed closely by another defensive tackle, Akeem Spence from Illinois, who put up the weight bar 37 times. The next-closest were two defensive tackles that both put up 33 reps.

One of the top prospects on the defensive line was unable to participate at the combine, and was asked to be sent home. Star Lotulelei, a defensive tackle from Utah was asked to withdrawal from the scouting combine, after doctors discovered an abnormality in his heart. There is no final diagnosis on the severity of the abnormality, but this discovery is at the least a setback for a top-ranked talent.

One of the biggest issues for the Indianapolis Colts last season was the offensive line. The Colts not only dealt with constant injuries on the line, but also with constant inconsistency. There’s little doubt that the Colts looked long and hard at several offensive lineman during the NFL Scouting Combine last week at Lucas Oil Stadium.

There were several top-performers in the bench press that were from the offensive line, led by guard Eric Herman from Ohio. Herman was tied for the fourth-highest production in the bench press, with 36 reps. There were also seven other offensive linemen that recorded over 30 reps in the bench press competition.

2013 was also a record-breaking year for offensive lineman in the 40-yard dash. Offensive tackle Terron Armstead from Arkansas-Pine Bluff set the all-time fastest 40-yard dash for an offensive lineman, with a 4.71 dash time. Armstead was the second lineman to break the dash record for his position this year. Lane Johnson, offensive tackle from Oklahoma, came in just behind Armstead, with a time of 4.72 in the 40-yard dash.

Offensive lineman are getting bigger and faster. The Colts have talent on their line, but they need consistency. If they can pick up another young player to put on their offensive line, then hopefully they can help mold him into helpful stability for the near future.

The Indianapolis Colts may have seen more players of interest perform on the final day of workouts at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine. Tuesday served as the closing day for the combine, spotlighting defensive backs. Defensive backs are definitely an issue for the Colts, and they may have just seen a few performances that could help sway their decision in this April’s NFL Draft.

Several of the defensive backs who did workouts on Tuesday finished as top performers at the combine, which might make them all the more appealing to the Colts, who were burned often in the secondary last season, including a wild card playoff loss to the world champion Baltimore Ravens. Eight of the top fifteen fastest 40-yard dash times at the combine were from defensive backs, including the fifth-fastest 40, from cornerback Darius Slay from Mississippi St., who finished with a time 4.36 in the dash.

Several other safeties and cornerbacks led the combine in the vertical jump drills. Seven of the top ten vertical jumps were defensive backs. There was a five-way tie for the third-best vertical, at 40.5 inches, and all were defensive backs.

The Indianapolis Colts could definitely use some of these talents. They have been thin and abused at the defensive back position, and even their previous draft at those spots have not come to fruition. If the Colts decide to take a cornerback or a safety in the draft, very few would be surprised or upset.
