We all know that the Indianapolis Colts are going to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the first pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, but there is always the possibility that owner Jim Irsay could fool us, again, and do something unexpected. Assuming that Irsay holds onto that top pick, though, it seems that the only viable alternative would be to draft Baylor quarterback and Heisman Trophy Winner Robert Griffin III.

The general consensus on Griffin is that he is a very talented young man and a better passer than Cam Newton, who was widely panned as a legitimate pro QB prospect last season but worked very hard to turn in a stellar first campaign with the Carolina Panthers. Like Newton, a major knock against Griffin is that Baylor ran from the shotgun on a huge portion of their offensive plays. While Newton thrived in that scheme, he has yet to prove that he can read defenses well or guide a more complicated offensive plan. Newton is very special, but his combination of work ethic and skills won’t be easy for anyone to duplicate, so Griffin would have a lot to live up to as the Number 1 pick.

The smart money is still on Luck landing in Indy, but Griffin lurks as a possibility, however remote.

Yeah, the Colts have a new coach, but I don’t see any reason why the hiring of Chuck Pagano would change their draft intentions, at least at the top. By May, the Horseshoes should be feeling full of Luck.
