There has got to be nothing more frustrating for a young football player than the possibility of getting hurt and not getting your chance to shine. The Colt third round draft pick, Kevin Thomas, may be faced with just such a situation.

The exact extent of the injury was not made known to the public, but the Colts did say that Thomas did suffer an injury during the last workout of the day. The USC alum is already scheduled for surgery.

This could mean one of two things. Either Thomas is screwed and out for the year before the season is even close to starting or if Thomas has surgery now he may be able to come back in time for the 2010 season.

Losing Thomas for the season could prove to be deadly for the Colts hopes of getting back to the Super Bowl. The departure of Marlin Jackson left a void in the Colt’s secondary which Thomas was going to help fill.

“He certainly does have a very good pass defense skill set, where he can play man-to-man, which is something we’ve played a little bit more of than we have in the past,” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said after selecting Thomas. “He’s a guy who can walk up and pressure you a little bit and play some bump-and-run.”(ESPN)

Hopefully the young man is not hurt too bad. Get well soon, Thomas. The team could sure use you.

When your team was a Super Bowl participant the previous season and has been a contender for many years there is little need to change much. Besides some of the duties of the coaching staff, the Indianapolis Colts have not been real active.

For the Colts to take the next step they will need to get some offensive line help, something they have been looking into so far this off-season. Beyond that, they could stand to improve the defensive secondary with the departure of Marlin Jackson and the questionable health of Bob Sanders.

Ray Fisherwould love to be part of that solution without a doubt. The Indiana product visited with the Colts earlier in the week and could be the return man the team needs as well as a possible cornerback. Indianapolis ranked in the lower half of the league in kick returns last year; Fisher led the nation with a 36.1 yard kick return average last year.

Beyond that, the most exciting news coming out of Colt camp is the announcement that they will be playing the Bills in Toronto next season during the preseason. I know, I’m with you; it’s the preseason- who cares?

That is my point exactly. While the news of the NFL these days is filled with stories about players assaulting women, throwing drinks at them, driving drunk, carrying loaded guns into airports, and basically being stupid, spoiled, over-paid fools you are hearing nothing about the Colts except they are playing a preseason game in Canada. Not only is no news good news in this case (since it means no one is either acting up or getting caught acting up), it shows that the Colts are a quality organization run and populated with people you can be proud to be associated with.

Can you say that, Steeler Nation? Can you?

The Colts have continued making some moves this off-season and at least one of them has to make you wonder if their may be change in the air in Indy.

Change has already been in the air defensively. DB Marlin Jackson was let go; he already has found a new home in Philadelphia. Raheem Brockis not expected to be back with the team next season, but his future is still up in the air. Luckily, Irsay was smart enough to at least hold onto the defensive leader of the team in Gary Brackett.

Everybody’s favorite backup QB Jim Sorgibecame unemployed last week. That can’ come as too much of a surprise. When he did play he was barely an effective place holder for Manning. However, in his defense, when you play behind a guy like Peyton Manning you don’t get many opportunities to work on your game either. It would be nice to see the guy catch on and do well somewhere- good luck, Jim.

He was not unemployed for long though as he is now set to back up Peyton’s little brother in New York.

The move that could come as a sign that change may be in the air is the release of starting offensive guard Ryan Lilja. claimed off of waiver in ’04, Lilja has been a mainstay on the line having started 67 games in his time with the team.

According to his agent the team has expressed a desire to go bigger. That can only mean one thing- they must finally be getting serious about developing a running game. What will be interesting is how well a new, larger offensive line will be able to protect Peyton. Passing has been the team’s bread and butter, but the lack of an effective running game has kept the Colts from becoming the latest, greatest dynasty.

What the Colts will have to watch out for is losing that bread and butter in their effort to get a running attack. Good run blocking lines are generally not as strong at pass blocking. Now that we know Peyton is not made of steel, the need for protecting him will be vital to the team’s continued success. Perhaps that is also why Sorgi no longer has a job with the Colts; the team wants a backup that can take over if necessary.

As the draft approaches and free agency continnues it will be interesting to see what move the Colts will make next.
