Colts to Sign a Wide Receiver?

Jim Irsay takes to Twitter to hint at a “whopper” signing.

The Colts have been unusually busy this offseason. With hefty pockets due to having $43.427 million in cap space, the Colts have already gone on a $34.3 million shopping spree on offensive and defensive weapons. Though no established superstars will join the roster in 2013, notable additions include right tackle Gosder Cherilus, safety LaRon Landry, and defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois. In total, Indy signed seven free agents, re-signed two current Colts, and franchised punter Pat McAfee.

And they may not be done yet.

Despite being in Arizona for NFL meetings, Jim Irsay went on a 1-am Twitter spree last night, sending out roughly 8 tweets that hinted at a new impending signing – a trade perhaps.

“ColtFans, we already past the cap cash wise/ we’re workin on a deal, 1 we’ve been workin on for 5 days/ we’re ver, very close 2 making it work”

“In Arizona, but the phone lines are burning up…we want to win so damn bad our toes ache and our brains are gurgling!!!!!!!”

“Our fingers could end up crooked and elbows drip with sweat and blood!”

“The car almost ended up n the ditch…swerving towards negativity, but we’re still n the fight..we’re desperately trying, need coffee, strong!”

“We need a turnover, slipping away but 4 minutes ago we started running the no huddle…moving the arrow again but it’s nip n tuck!!!!”

“Everyone stand buy, pour strong drink…do ur voodoo,Colts need the strength of its nation to get this whopper in the boat! DO U UNDERSTAND?!”

And if you wanted a hint as to what kind of player this deal could be for, Irsay was glad to provide:

Who exactly could it be? Well, Irsay has been known to over-hype a signing. Ricky Jean Francois may not have been the player Colts fans would expect to be “ELATED!!!!!” about. But who knows? The most eligible wide receivers on the market include restricted free agent Victor Cruz (now that would be something to get excited about). Davone Bess from Miami is another name that has swirled with the rumors. Doug Baldwin from Seatlle even has ties to the Colts after playing at Stanford with Andrew Luck and under new Colts OC Pep Hamilton.

Irsay has left us with another cryptic mystery, but hopefully it’s solved sooner rather than later.

‘I know sum of u fans want BIG names n neon- Old,hurt or off field question marks/Grigson isn’t GM of year, who won 11 games by being wrong!’

Those words are from a post on Twitter from Indianapolis Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay. Irsay’s tweet was in defense of the Colts’ choice to choose a slew of low-profile players on the first day of free agency, rather than blowing their entire wad on a big-name risk. The Colts did well with this decision last season, finding success with many under-rated players and former “no-names”. General manager Ryan Grigson won NFL Executive of the Year last season, by making many choices similar to these.

Aside from the opening-day gathering of position skill players, the Colts have already begun to make other important moves. On Tuesday, Indianapolis gave cornerback Darius Butler a new two-year contract. Irsay has also tweeted out that former Jets safety Laron Landry was ‘in the building’ at the Colts complex in Indianapolis. Signing Landry would be a pretty big splash in the free agent pool.

Twitter has helped to give a voice to the voiceless, but some of those voices should be treated as static. Irsay is known to wear his heart on his sleeve, but there’s no good to come from worrying about what random angry fans think on social media. You can’t make all the people happy all the time. If the Colts stick to the program, they will silence some of those angry voices.

It seems that something which occurred last season, possibly could have happened nearly a decade ago. Peyton Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts around this time last year, but it may have been that former general manager Bill Polian, was possibly willing to let Manning leave the Colts way before that. Neither man is with the Colts now, but one can always wonder what might have been, if Manning was indeed traded a long time ago.

During a interview with columnist Bob Kravitz from the Indianapolis Star, Colts’ owner Jim Irsay stated that Polian actually brought up the idea of trading Manning in 2004. At the time, Manning and the Colts were in debates over a contract extension. Polian, upset with the frustrations over the contract stalemate, mentioned to Irsay that the Colts should consider trading Manning. Polian offered up the option of trading Manning for a slew of defensive players. Irsay obviously vetod that idea, and the rest is history.

Manning ended up with a $98 million contract, and remained a Colt until the soap opera-style drama that surrounded his departure on March 6th of last year. Manning threw a NFL-record 49 touchdowns during the season following his contract extension, racking up his second consecutive NFL MVP award, as well. Manning would go on to win four total MVP awards as a Colt, more than any player in NFL history. The Colts also appeared in two Super Bowls with Manning, coming out victorious in Super Bowl XLI.

Polian was dismissed from the Colts in January of last year, and is now an analyst for ESPN. In hindsight, Polian’s idea to dismiss Manning prior to the prime of his career seems shockingly ludacris. Irsay must have thought very little of trading Manning at the time, as well. Still, we can all now sit around and think what may have been.
