For the first time in what seems like forever, the Indianapolis Colts actually signed some free agents this year who might have a chance of impacting the team on the field. Combine those signings with the Colts’ own returning free agents and compacted off-season schedule, and the past two weeks have been a harried period unlike any other in NFL history. For many of the Colts’ biggest names, though, not much has been happening since they were inked to their new contracts. As the Washington Post reports today, all that changed in the fifth day of Colts training camp, and the signees hit the field to start preparing for the new season. All of the returning and new free agents have now seen action with the big exception of You Know Who.

Practicing for the first time were holdovers Joseph Addai and Melvin Bullitt and newcomers Ernie Sims, Jamaal Anderson and Tommie Harris. How well those first two are recovered from injuries, and how much those last three have left, will go a long way toward determining if the Colts have any chance of making it to the Super Bowl at home next February. Of course, a certain MIA quarterback might have something to say about that, too.

On the first day of training camp, the Colts finally made a big free agent splash … well, OK, not really a splash, but they did drop a few pebbles into their own FA pond by re-signing defensive tackle Eric Foster, offensive guard Kyle DeVan, offensive tackle Michael Toudouze and defensive tackle Antonio Johnson. Foster, DeVan and Johnson are all starters whose return gives the Colts some continuity as they gear up for this season. Say what you will about how boring the Colts are at times, but they know what to expect from these guys, and having players who work well with each other will be more important than ever this year as the NFL comes out of the lockout. The Colts need to make some improvements for sure (left tackle, run stuffing, special teams), but the status quo has served them fairly well in the last 12 seasons. Looks like we’ll get a chance to see if the same holds this time around.
