Colts to Sign a Wide Receiver?

Jim Irsay takes to Twitter to hint at a “whopper” signing.

The Colts have been unusually busy this offseason. With hefty pockets due to having $43.427 million in cap space, the Colts have already gone on a $34.3 million shopping spree on offensive and defensive weapons. Though no established superstars will join the roster in 2013, notable additions include right tackle Gosder Cherilus, safety LaRon Landry, and defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois. In total, Indy signed seven free agents, re-signed two current Colts, and franchised punter Pat McAfee.

And they may not be done yet.

Despite being in Arizona for NFL meetings, Jim Irsay went on a 1-am Twitter spree last night, sending out roughly 8 tweets that hinted at a new impending signing – a trade perhaps.

“ColtFans, we already past the cap cash wise/ we’re workin on a deal, 1 we’ve been workin on for 5 days/ we’re ver,very close 2 making it work”

“In Arizona, but the phone lines are burning up…we want to win so damn bad our toes ache and our brains are gurgling!!!!!!!”

“Our fingers could end up crooked and elbows drip with sweat and blood!”

“The car almost ended up n the ditch…swerving towards negativity, but we’re still n the fight..we’re desperately trying,need coffee,strong!”

“We need a turnover,slipping away but 4 minutes ago we started running the no huddle…moving the arrow again but it’s nip n tuck!!!!”

“Everyone stand buy,pour strong drink…do ur voodoo,Colts need the strength of its nation to get this whopper in the boat! DO U UNDERSTAND?!”

And if you wanted a hint as to what kind of player this deal could be for, Irsay was glad to provide:

Who exactly could it be? Well, Irsay has been known to over-hype a signing. Ricky Jean Francois may not have been the player Colts fans would expect to be “ELATED!!!!!” about. But who knows? The most eligible wide receivers on the market include restricted free agent Victor Cruz (now that would be something to get excited about). Davone Bess from Miami is another name that has swirled with the rumors. Doug Baldwin from Seatlle even has ties to the Colts after playing at Stanford with Andrew Luck and under new Colts OC Pep Hamilton.

Irsay has left us with another cryptic mystery, but hopefully it’s solved sooner rather than later.

The clock was ticking for the Colts to franchise one of their players. Each team in the NFL has until March 4th to place their franchise tag. If the Colts can indeed get a deal done with McAfee in the next few days, then it would save the issue of teams shopping around for him, as well as lock up one of the league’s best punters for another few years.

Putting the franchise title on a punter is basically unheard of, but losing McAfee would be more costly for the Colts than some might think. Last season, McAfee put up record-breaking numbers for his franchise. MaCafee had a franchise-best punt yardage average, at over 48 yards per punt. In 2012, he put up 45 kickoffs that resulted in touchbacks, which is also a record for the Colts.

Ever since the NFL lockout ended and free agency descended upon the league and its fans, there have been rumors surrounding the Indianapolis Colts’ supposed impending acquisition of some big-name, but aging and/or troubled, receiver or another.   Randy Moss is coming here … Plaxico Burress is coming here … Terrell Owens is coming here!   No wait … Randy Moss is coming here.   Some of these rumors seem to have legs and some are completely made up (trace back through the re-Tweets and the @s, and you can clearly see that they are fabrications), but the real question is why do Colts fans seem so eager for one of these guys to suit up with the Horseshoes?   It’s not like the Colts don’t already have a deep receiving corps, and that doesn’t even count the catching contributions out of the backfield.
