So last week I was a little off base with my call out on Eli Manning, as he ended up throwing for four touchdowns and just over 250 yards against an Eagles defense that was expected to shut down most opponents. Let me tell you why that was a fluke: first of all Eli only completed 16 passes on 23 attempts, so it’s not like the Giants aired out the ball to its receivers. They will do their best to run the ball, and that’s probably their key to success. As for Michael Turner and his 20 yards on 11 carries, let’s just say that he and I aren’t on speaking terms at the moment and won’t be unless he rushes for at least 100 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks this weekend. Enough with the preamble; let’s look at my picks for this weekend’s start’em/sit’em.

Running Backs

Start’em

Chris Johnson, Titans

You’re obviously starting Chris Johnson if you drafted him, but for those of you trying to get cute with your lineups, one word of advice: don’t! I traded him on week 5 the year he went crazy and emerged onto the fantasy scene. Let’s just say I regretted every second. Just give CJ2K some time, because his schedule after the bye week is quite favorable. Plus, few players have the ability to break open a big run like Johnson does, and that alone is worth the wait.

Ryan Matthews, Chargers

The guy has finally arrived, and he just might be here to stay as long as Mike Tolbert doesn’t sneak in to vulture any goal line carries. This week against the Dolphins is going to be Matthews’ make-or-break game in my opinion. If he is able to come through with a solid outing, then he should get the bulk of the carries the rest of the season.

Read the rest of my fantasy picks after the jump …

The NFL free agent season finally seems to be on the horizon, with the continued rumblings about a new labor deal, and the compressed time frame promises to lead to some excitement in the next couple of weeks. The Indianapolis Colts have their own stable of free agents to address (Joseph Addai, Melvin Bullitt, Clint Session, etc.), and they may look in the open market for help at left offensive tackle or defensive end or maybe even at running back. There is one free agent signing, though, already done and sealed, that could eventually have some impact on the Colts: Bob Sanders to the San Diego Chargers.

This is the first time since 2008 that Colts fans aren’t wringing our collective hands over Sanders health at the beginning of a season, but that’s just because he was finally released this past winter. There was some talk at the time that he could eventually be picked up again in free agency, but San Diego snatched him up before the ink was dry on his walking papers. While Sanders has proven to be exceedingly fragile, thanks to a combination of his reckless-abandon style and his diminutive size, he is undoubtedly supremely talented, having snagged NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2007. It’s no wonder that San Diego took a flyer on him. I think a lot of Colts fans felt that we’d seen the last of Sanders in the NFL.

So now, the team that has become a constant thorn in Indy’s side potentially has a new way to cause pain for the Colts offensive attack. Sanders is presumably healthy, for now, and probably very motivated to make an impact this year. The Bolts don’t appear on the regular-season schedule, but these teams always seem to meet in the playoffs, and that’s where the real trouble begins. It would be extremely painful to watch Sanders seal the Colts’ next elimination with a late pick, particularly if Melvin Bullitt walks.

Thankfully, San Diego would probably need to ice him right now for that to happen.

It’s simple, actually, why the Chargers beat the Colts this afternoon. They simply outplayed us. Yes, you could say that the Marlin Jackson-hands-to-the-face penalty was crucial as it would have ended a significant drive in the Q3. Or, Marvin Harrison‘s fumble in the first half. You could say that Peyton Manning could have thrown those two INT-deflections better, but the fact is the ball hit the hands…There’s no excuse why they weren’t caught because the ball hit the receivers’ hands. So many reasons and excuses Colts fans could use for the loss today, but, come on, the Chargers obviously wanted it more. It’s just that simple.

Simple or not, this isn’t the bitter fan of the losers talking when I say that Philip Rivers showed absolutely ZERO class today when his punk ass was limping off the field after the Colts canceled him from the game.

The Chargers wanted it more so congratulations to them. Now…go and beat the effin’ crap-eatin’ smirks off the faces of those Patriots, would you?
