Just a couple of summers ago, the Indianapolis Colts ended their relationship with the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and moved their training camp back to Anderson, northeast of Indianapolis. The camp had been held in Anderson for several years before moving to Terre Haute, and the team’s return gave a real, if temporary, spark to the beleaguered city. Now, it appears the Colts may be getting happy feet again, maybe thanks to the nearly complete staff turnover they’ve effected in the last couple of months.

In particular, new coach Chuck Pagano said yesterday that a return to Anderson is no sure thing:

“Nothing is in concrete. (It’s) just something that we’ve got to tackle and head off at the pass sooner than later.”

I wouldn’t be too thrilled with that particular brand of tea leaf were I an Anderson resident hoping for the Horseshoes to boost the local economy again this summer.

The Indianapolis Colts lined up at training camp in Anderson for their annual Blue v. White scrimmage this morning, and just a few Colts fans trickled into the arena for the event. OK, according to Brad Brown via Twitter, it was a few more than a few, as more than 4000 Colts supporters descended on Macholtz Stadium for the festivities. There were a decent number of empty seats, but I’m not sure at what point the shot was snapped. One thing is for sure, though, the Colts have a rabid and loyal following in central Indiana, and we’re hungry for some real games. That opener with the Texans can’t get here soon enough, even though there is a lot of work to do between now and then.

The Indianapolis Star published to Colts’ full training camp schedule today, and things get rolling when the team reports to Anderson on Sunday, July 31. After the lockout ended, there was some confusion about whether the Colts would be forced by the new agreement to open camp on Friday, two days early, but they are apparently adhering to their original schedule (i.e., the July 31 opening date). Of course, even a week ago, Anderson residents and officials were nervous about whether or not training camp would happen at all. For the struggling city to get the whole shebang fully intact is great news all the way around.

The Colts will play their first pre-season game, on the road against the St. Louis Rams, while training camp is still in session before closing up shop in Anderson on August 18. The team will then play three more pre-season games before traveling to Houston for the season opener on September 11. Colts practices are open and free to the public, but there will be a parking fee levied by Anderson University, whose facilities the team uses during camp.
