Personally, I am a big fan of the guys in the trenches. I love watching the fight that goes on between the offensive line and defensive line. These guys are going at it every single down. Other positions can take plays off or get away without making contact on a number of plays; not so for the linemen. These men are true warriors, engaging in battle each and every snap.

It is hard to make an argument that the offensive line for the Colts is in need of improvement, but I do believe that it is. I know that under their former coach, the offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the league in 6 of the last 12 years. However, at the same time the Colts have been unable to get much of a running attack going.

Had they had a running game that ranked in the top 15 most of the last 12 seasons, we would be talking about how many Super Bowls they have won in the last decade instead of hoping Peyton can get a secod before he retires.

It has been good to hear that head coach Jim Caldwell thinks this is one area that needs to be better and that the team did work towards that effect during OTAs and minicamp. It was also good to hear that the unit has a chip on their shoulder and is looking to prove something.

I got nothing but love for you guys, but your run blocking leaves something to be desired.

The absence of longtime coach Howard Mudd will make the task a bit harder. He is arguably one of the better offensive line coaches in football, but following the Super Bowl he decided it was time to golf and go fishing rather than hang out with a bunch of man-mountains.

Colt fans had to breath a sigh of relief recently when it was reported that the team had come to terms with safety Antoine Bethea. With Bob Sanders out most of the last two seasons with injuries Bethea stepped up admirably and played well.

Exact details of his contract were not released, but were reported to be around $27 million over the next four years.

With one major free agent down one would think that the Colts would then look to get the other two, Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis, into the fold as quickly as possible. Instead they are reportedly planning on stonewalling the wide receiver and defensive lineman.

What in the %^$#* is Irsay thinking? I understand not wanting players to just hold you up for more money by sitting out, but these are two guys that are pretty important to the team’s success. Without Mathis, every team the Colts play will double team Freeney; when that happens the secondary will have their work cut out for them.

Pierre Garcon looked good last season, but the Colts are crazy if they think he is ready to be a number one and trust Anthony Gonzalez to be a #2.

Then again Wayne is a little foolish too. He should have done this last year when he was a little younger and not so close to the end of the line himself.

What makes this all even more interesting is that the Colts seem more concerned about signing Peyton Manning to an extension; not just any extension though, but according to Irsay the fattest one in history.

Jim, I think Peyton is a Colt for life, but even he would not be that good without the time on offense and the support players around him. You might want to think about how you are spending your money a little bit.

It is insane to hear the numbers that are being discussed not just for specific contracts but for the league as a whole.

Case in point is the contract that Peyton Manning is expected to sign sometime this year. Jim Irsay has already made it known that he plans on ginving his QB the biggest contract in history. I’m happy for Peyton, that he is getting his just dessert for the quality of play and the honors that he has brought to the Colts. I’m also glad that Irsay is not just ditching the QB as he gets older, but is actually showing him the gratitude and respect that he deserves.

What those numbers are remain to be seen, but his last extension was for five years and close to $100 million; and the next one is going to be bigger. The crazy part is that Irsay can actually afford to do that as well as pay everyone else on the roster AND make a profit.

What makes it all even crazier is that the billionaire/ millionaire owners and the filthy rich players (even the league minimun guys get paid very well) are set to argue over money and possibly keep both sides from earning any. Are they really that stupid?

How can these guys not be satisfied with the status quo at least? They are all doing very well, yet there greed could possibly result in a strike. While these guys will still be sitting pretty with the moneythey have already made, the fans will be screwed with no football to watch.

I would love to see a return to the old days where guys played because they loved it. The guys in the old movie North Dallas Forty got paid crap yet still did everything they could to play the game, and play it well. For them it was all about heart, not the money. That was real football.

Today’s football has become corporate. Just like anything else corporate, the final product is getting diluted. But do these guys really care? Or is the millions they get what really matters to them?
