Did the Indianapolis Colts Have a Mild 2014 NFL Draft?

The Indianapolis Colts found themselves a bit restrained, when it came to the 2014 NFL Draft. While other teams had multitudes of draft picks, the Colts were forced to sit until late in round two, while pick after pick fell off the board. The Colts tried their best to fill needs with what fell into their lap, but did they do enough?

The Colts had only five selections in this year’s draft, but had several holes to fill. When the 59th overall selection finally came around, the Colts went with offensive line assistance, by selecting OL – Jack Mewhort, from Ohio State. Mewhort was also an academic All-American, and may be able to play at several spots on the offensive line.

When round three came up, the Colts used their second selection on WR – Donte Moncrief, from Ole Miss. Although the Colts do need an eventual replacement for veteran wideout Reggie Wayne, this selection seemed a bit puzzling. The receiving roster is the deepest on this team right now, and this particular draft was very heavy in that position.

The Colts also were without a round four pick, so had to wait until round five to make their third selection. Indianapolis stayed near home, by picking up DE – Jonathan Newsome from Ball State. Newsome could be used behind (or alongside) OLB – Robert Mathis.

In rounds six and seven, the Colts wrapped up their draft, by selecting LB – Andrew Jackson (Western Kentucky) and OT – Ulrick John (Georgia State). Jackson and John could still find themselves making this roster, despite their deep draft selection. The linebackers and offensive line could be two of the strongest position battles for the Colts this season.

Only time will tell how this draft class pans out. Although these selections may not have any flashy players, that pop off the sports page just yet, they will all have their opportunities, to try and mold into one of the best young teams in the NFL.
