Colts WR Reggie Wayne 2013 Fantasy Football Preview

The ageless Reggie Wayne enters the 2013 season as one of the best wide receivers we’ve seen in recent NFL history, and coming off of his season in 2012, we have no reason to believe he won’t be the number one target for Andrew Luck this season. Wayne had a nearly identical season in 2012 (his first year with Luck at QB) as he did in 2010 (his final year with Peyton Manning).Last season, Wayne caught 106 passes for 1,355 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 84.7 yards per game. In 2010 with Manning, Wayne caught 111 passes for 1,355 yards and six touchdowns, so he obviously likes having Luck throwing him passes as opposed to the huge dip in numbers he experienced in 2011.

Here is a look at Wayne’s career stats:

Wayne’s ability to run routes and make tough catches have me convinced that he will once again be a solid WR2 in fantasy football leagues. You will probably be able to get Wayne as one of the last second-tier WRs in most drafts, and he is a huge bargain if you ask me. I think Wayne is a solid bet to be Luck’s number one target once again this season, and the Colts are sure to pass the ball a lot with Luck under center.

2013 Projections: 105 receptions, 1,300 yards, 7 TDs

Wayne doesn’t blow you away with his touchdown numbers, but he is certainly capable of putting up a lot of yardage and stretching the field, even at his age. Wayne is a guy who moves the chains for the Colts, averaging nearly 13 yards per reception. He can go off for over 100 yards a few times a year, and now that he’s built a better chemistry with Andrew Luck, we could see that number increase.

My biggest fear with Wayne is the fact that he and most other Miami players who are vets in the NFL take the OTAs off, but Wayne has to learn Pep Hamilton’s offense this year. At his old age, Wayne is probably a bit annoyed that he has to keep learning new offenses, but he will still be a productive player.

Overall, I like Wayne’s fantasy prospects for 2013, but he probably won’t blow anyone away like he did back in the Colts’ glory days. Wayne will be available in most leagues for a bargain price and he will consistently put up receptions and yards, but touchdowns could be a little sporadic.
