Report: Joe Lefeged Arrested in Washington D.C. Overnight

** UPDATE ** According to new reports, Lefeged was arrested for multiple gun-related offenses after fleeing police during a traffic stop. Given the current state of the NFL with Aaron Hernadez and potential gun problems, this news will not be received well by Commissioner Roger Goodell. Lefeged is being arraigned this afternoon on a few charges, including carrying a firearm without license, unregistered firearm, unregistered ammunition, and presence of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

An employee of the city jail in Washington, D.C. has confirmed that Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged was arrested overnight. The Colts do not have more information on the arrest, so we’re awaiting details as they come in.

With the recent situation surrounding Aaron Hernandez, I find it hard to believe any NFL player is having a problem keeping their nose out of trouble, but Lefeged has obviously gotten himself into some kind of predicament here.

Lefeged, 25, is a third-year safety for the Colts who started five games last year including the playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He’s been a contributor on both defense and special teams throughout his career, and is currently projected as the backup to LaRon Landry at the strong safety position.

After last season, Lefeged had totaled 65 career tackles with two interceptions, as well as 646 kickoff return yards. Lefeged was expected to be a mid-later round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, but he wound up going undrafted and the Colts looked like they had a steal. Hopefully this turns out to be a minor issue for Lefeged, because the Colts really need him for their defensive and special teams rotation this fall.

Lefeged has become a starter in both his rookie and sophomore seasons after injuries forced other players ahead of him in the lineup, but he is probably the special teams ace of this Colts team. Losing him for any period of time would be a big hit.
