Indianapolis Colts Keep Cassius Vaughn and Darius Butler

During the first frenzied week of NFL free agency madness, when many teams are frantically trying to snatch up available players from other teams, the Indianapolis Colts decided to also keep a few key players close to home. Along with bringing in six new free agents, and releasing several players from last season’s roster, the Colts have also decided to re-sign two defensive backs.

Cornerbacks Cassius Vaughn and Darius Butler have both been offered new contracts by the Colts. Last week, Indianapolis offered a two-year contract extension to Butler, and Vaughn signed his qualifying offer on Monday. Both players were part of a Indianapolis secondary that was equally impressive and inconsistent at times last season. Both Butler and Vaughn received Defensive Player of the Week honors at one point during the 2012 regular season.

With the addition of two new cornerbacks in free agency, it’s difficult to say where Vaughn and Butler will fit into this roster. Cornerback Vontae Davis was brought in as a starter last season, traded for a second-round pick from the Miami Dolphins. It seems like both these players will be in the rotation, and be in contention to start on the other side of Davis, until the Colts find the right player for the spot.
