With Brett Favre re-retiring for the 571st time it was hard for anything else to make news in the NFL today. Colts players are beginning to get back into the two-a-day regime, and fans are eagerly counting down days until the first preseason game, which would be eleven for those who are counting.

One cool thing to come from camp today though was that the Colts will be wearing throwback unis in that opening preseason tilt against the 49ers. As Phil B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star reports:

“The Indianapolis Colts will open the preseason Aug. 15 in throwback 1955 uniforms which include blue helmets, the team announced today.The uniforms are similar to the ones used on Thanksgiving Day 2004 except the helmet color. The Colts, in 1956 throwbacks with white helmets, crushed Detroit 41-9 at Ford Field.”

The first preseason game would seem to me like the perfect time for the Colts to go throwback. People have been craving football for months (doesn’t the off-season just seem to get longer every year?) and if I were a marketing guy I would be all over doing something different like this for the first game back.

I love the location of the horseshoe on this particular helmet. Sure, it is good for the NFL to have every team sticking to what is a pretty rigid uniform and logo template, but it is nice to see something a little bit different, and the horseshoes on the back of the helmet really stand out.

The other news of note for the day was another uniform issue, this time with Peyton “Darth” Manning. Manning was complaining of an eye infection which was bothered by light so he practiced today with a LT style dark visor. Though it is just a temporary fix I am of the opinion that Manning should bring out some kind of space age looking visor with the throwback helmet and thus the Colts would be the first ever team to wear throwforward unis. Actually now I come to think of it, how cool would it be for the team to wear the 1955s in the first preseason game, regular unis for the middle two, and a uni design from 2065 for the final preseason match up.

Maybe Manning’s suit could even include a real laser rocket arm!
